The U. S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday warned consumers that the estrogen drug Premarin has not been approved for use in women. It's used to treat breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
The FDA said the FDA will continue to approve Premarin for use in women, but will allow more women who experience the condition to get the pill at a cost of $2.85 a month.
"The FDA is committed to providing consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions about their health,” said John C. Clark, Jr., FDA’s chief medical officer. “Consumers should be aware that estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is not recommended for use in women, but Premarin is not currently approved for use in women.”
The agency said it will continue to monitor the market for the drug and will consider other potential safety concerns related to the drug.
The FDA said Premarin is a form of the hormone estrogen, which occurs naturally in the body. A pill of Premarin will be effective for up to 36 months after it is taken.
The pill can be taken every day, for up to four weeks, with no need to remember to take it regularly.
“The drug is not approved for use in women, but it is still a prescription medicine and should only be used under the guidance of a physician,” the agency said.
Premarin is available in three strengths (25 mg, 50 mg and 75 mg), and is used to treat women with the condition:
The FDA also said the drug should be used only under the guidance of a doctor.
The drug should not be taken more than once a day, even if it is prescribed for the duration of a woman's menstrual cycle, the agency said.
The agency said it's working with the FDA to determine the best method for patients taking Premarin.
The FDA is committed to providing consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions about their health,” said C. J. Clark, M. D., director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Consumers should be aware that the information they receive on the label of the drug is not always accurate.”
Premarin is a form of the hormone estrogen, which occurs naturally in the body. It's approved for use in women, and the drug is available to buy online through websites like and.com.
The drug was developed by a group of scientists in the early 1990s at the University of Southern California. In 2001, a group of researchers from the university filed a patent application for Premarin for use in women.
The drug is available for purchase online and through pharmacies, which can sometimes be found in the US.
The drug's manufacturer, Pfizer, said that the drug is a prescription medication that is effective for treating women's symptoms of breast cancer. The drug's label states that it is not recommended for use in women, and it should only be used under the guidance of a physician.
The FDA said it will continue to monitor the market for the drug and will consider other potential safety concerns related to the drug. It is working with the FDA to determine the best method for patients taking the drug.

The FDA has not received a request from people who are currently taking the drug to contact them to report side effects to the FDA's MedWatch program.
